What is an Individual Certificate in Title IX?

Tulane University Law School is now offering eleven individual certificates on Title IX Compliance areas; from the foundations of Title IX, to Athletics, to Sex Misconduct, to name a few. Each Individual Certificate course runs for six weeks with a two week break between sessions if you choose to register for more than one certificate. Upon completion of the course you will receive an individual certificate from Tulane Law on the course of study.

What is a Specialization Certification in Title IX?

In addition to our Individual Certificates, Tulane University Law School is offering five Specialization Certifications. Each of these specialized certifications focuses on a particular aspect of Title IX Compliance. This certification is designed to demonstrate that the participant has obtained broad and deep training in all aspects of this area of expertise. The subject areas of specialization include Adjudication, Investigation, Athletics, K-12 Compliance, and Advanced Training for Higher Education Coordinators.

In order to obtain any one of these Specialization Certifications, a participant must obtain the individual certificates that are associated with that specialization.

What are the five specialization areas?
  • Title IX Adjudicator Specialization Certification –  This specialization certificate is for those internal and external personnel who have responsibility for adjudicating Title IX related disciplinary matters.  This certificate provides details on how to thoughtfully structure and handle hearings in a professional manner geared towards affording participants a meaningful opportunity to be heard and to ensure that all applicable laws are followed in the process. This specialization certificate is comprised of the following courses or individual certificates: Certificates 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 (5 courses) – more detail on these individual certificates below.
  • Title IX Investigator Specialization Certification –  Geared to both professionals within and outside educational institutions who have been tasked to investigate Title IX related claims including allegations of sexual misconduct, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, and sex harassment, this certification explores processes, practices, and strategies to ensure that Title IX investigations are thorough and equitable. This specialization certificate is comprised of the following courses or individual certificates: Certificates 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 (6 courses) – more detail on these individual certificates below.
  • Title IX Athletics Specialization Certification –  This specialization certificate is for those employees in higher education and K-12 institutions who have responsibility for ensuring athletics programs comply with Title IX.  It meaningfully discusses foundational athletics compliance obligations as well as best practices to ensure compliance. This specialization certificate is comprised of the following courses or individual certificates: Certificates 1, 2, 8, and 9 (4 courses) – more detail on these individual certificates below.
  • K-12 Title IX Administrator Specialization Certification  -- This specialization certificate is targeted to K-12 administrators and the unique issues they face when complying with Title IX. This specialization certificate is comprised of the following courses or individual certificates: Certificates 1, 2, 6, 7, 10 (5 courses) – more detail on these individual certificates below.
  • Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certification – This specialization certificate is targeted to current and prospective Title IX Coordinators and addresses the full range of responsibilities necessary to create a robust Title IX compliance program. This specialization certificate is comprised of the following courses or individual certificates:  All certificates (11 courses) – more detail on these individual certificates below.
What are the individual certificates that are available?

Tulane Law School has eleven different individual certificates available. Each certificate can be taken on its own to receive a certificate upon completion of the course. However, each individual certificate is also part of one or many of the specialization certifications above.

  • Certificate 1: The Foundations of Title IX:  A Summary of the History and Development of the Law:  A discussion of the legislative history leading to the passage of Title IX, a summary of Title IX’s significant regulations and administrative guidance documents, and the essential court decisions which shaped the law up until today. Certificate 1 is part of the Title IX Adjudicator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Investigator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Athletics Specialization Certificate, K-12 Title IX Administrator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 2: Legal Essentials: An Exploration of Critical Legal Principles Impacted by Title IX Matters:  An introduction to key legal principles, including Constitutional Due Process rights, education law, and tort law, and how they intertwine with Title IX. Certificate 2 is part of the Title IX Adjudicator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Investigator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Athletics Specialization Certificate, K-12 Title IX Administrator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 3: Title IX: Sex Harassment and Sex Misconduct Investigation Basics:   How to professionally handle a Title IX investigation including meaningfully assessing conflicts, preliminary planning, taking thorough and fair witness statements, identifying and reviewing critical evidence, thoughtfully assessing credibility, and preparing professional reports. Certificate 3 is part of the Title IX Investigator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 4: Title IX: Advanced Issues in Sex Harassment and Sex Misconduct Investigation:  A discussion of the common difficult issues which arise in the context of Title IX investigations and approaches on to handle those challenges. Certificate 4 is part of the Title IX Investigator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 5: Title IX: Hearings and Adjudications:  How to professionally prepare for, structure, and administer a Title IX related conduct hearing including a summary of case law principles developed regarding rights of complainants and respondents in such hearings. Certificate 5 is part of the Title IX Adjudicator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 6: Title IX: Legal Principles and Developments in Title IX Litigation:  A discussion of common Title IX causes of action, the legal principles employed to assess claims as well as unresolved legal issues. Certificate 6 is part of the Title IX Adjudicator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Investigator Specialization Certificate, K-12 Title IX Administrator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 7: Title IX and the Intersection with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VII, FERPA, and Other Statutes:  An introduction to various civil rights and other laws and how those laws implicate Title IX matters. Certificate 7 is part of the Title IX Adjudicator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Investigator Specialization Certificate, K-12 Title IX Administrator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 8: Title IX and Athletics Compliance: Basics:  An introduction to the compliance framework for assessing Title IX compliance in athletics programs and established practices on developing an effective Title IX athletics compliance program. Certificate 8 is part of the Title IX Athletics Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 9: Title IX and Athletics Compliance: Advanced:  A discussion of critical athletics-related litigation, the established case law principles, and unresolved and developing legal issues. Certificate 9 is part of the Title IX Athletics Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 10: Title IX and Issues Unique to K-12 Institutions:  A discussion of the Title IX legal issues unique to K-12 institutions, including handling requests for confidentiality, notifying parents, and mandatory reporting obligations. Certificate 10 is part of the K-12 Title IX Administrator Specialization Certificate, Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate
  • Certificate 11: Clery Act and VAWA Compliance:  A summary of the Clery Act and the Violence Against Women Act’s significant regulations and administrative guidance documents and how those laws interact with Title IX. Certificate 11 is part of the Title IX Coordinator Advanced Specialization Certificate

How are the Specialization Certifications and Individual Certificates priced?

The fee for registering for an individual certificate is $1250 per certificate.  In addition, we are offering $100 off, per course, for professionals who apply, register and pay for their course(s) in 2019.

*Offer Details: A $100 discount per course is automatically applied when you sign up for any number of courses in 2019. The discount is available for the September 2019, November 2019, and January 2020 sessions provided you complete an application, register, and make your payment for the course (or courses) by December 31, 2019. The discount is automatically deducted at the time of registration and payment.

What will I receive at completion of an individual certificate or specialization certification?

Upon completion of an individual certificate the student will receive a Tulane University Law School Certificate of Completion. Upon completion of a specialization certification another certificate will be received for the specialization.

Do I receive degree credit for these courses that I can apply towards an actual degree?

No, these certificates do not offer degree credits.

Who teaches the classes?

What can I expect in terms of workload?

Each individual certificate course runs for six weeks, followed by a two week break between new session starts. The commitment level per certificate, is five hours of student work/contact per week, for a total of about thirty hours per individual certificate.

What is required as part of the application?

An application containing the following items is required: Bachelor’s Degree with submission of official transcript(s).

How are admissions decisions communicated to applicants?

All decisions will be communicated to applicants via email.

Is financial aid available?

Non-credit courses are not eligible for federal financial aid.

Is it possible for my employer to cover all or part of the certificate tuition?

Applicants should check with their individual employers on whether each individual certificate or specialization certification is eligible for reimbursement.

When do classes begin?

Each individual certificate will follow an eight week rotation, with six weeks of coursework, followed by a two week break. Following is a tentative schedule, as course start dates are being finalized:

Do I need to participate in an Orientation?

You will not need to participate in an orientation. Each course has an introductory module that includes information on “How to Navigate My Course.” Additionally, there are help links and tutorials available to you. You will find the course structure easy to follow and navigate. For the live class sessions, we use the Zoom platform. If you have attended an informational webinar with us, you have successfully accessed the live classroom platform.

How are the online courses organized? Are they self-paced?
  • Each course is scheduled for six weeks of course/class time, followed by a break of approximately two weeks before the next individual certificate session
  • Each individual certificate is comprised of both asynchronous and synchronous components
    • Asynchronous consists of weekly sets of readings, pre-recorded lectures, discussion threads, and multiple choice quizzes that you access on each course’s website.
    • Synchronous content consists of a 90 minute live online class that will be held twice per session
What are the technical requirements for the online programs?

Students need to have regular and reliable access to a computer and high speed Internet. Note that mobile and tablet devices will not provide full access; students will need a laptop or desktop computer with videoconferencing capabilities (webcam & headset).

Are courses offered during the summer?

The individual certificates will continue year round, providing courses throughout the summer.

Is there a residential component?

There is no requirement that an online student come to our Tulane University Law School campus. However, we encourage students to visit Tulane Law if they choose.

I live in a state outside of Louisiana, can I apply?

Yes, the Tulane University Law School Title IX program is available to prospective students from all 50 states.
